Weekend in Monferrato

  • PDF

There are many possibilities to spend a pleasant weekend in Montferrat, all different and particularly desirable. As for the timing of your visit, we suggest you to choose the autumn for its warm colour tones and great cuisine and the spring for the multicolour explosion of flowers and trees, but also the summer will give you great opportunities, specially as regards feasts and public events. Obviously, we cannot exhaust here, in few lines, the innumerable possibilities that are offered to the wise tourist and describe you in detail all the pleasant things he could enjoy.  Instead, we should like to play with you proposing a particular, completely invented, situation. We are sure that this will reveal very meaningful, and we’ll name it “Gourmand-Cultural Programme”.

The location we have chosen to make our starting point is an imaginary village in Montferrat; more precisely, let’s say, in “Basso Monferrato”. We’ll call this village Pleasantville (absolutely invented, not to wrong somebody, since in Montferrat there are so many nice and comfortable villages).

After our arrival to the village, we’ll settle down in a hotel, preferably a Bed & Breakfast. B&B’s are generally widespread here in Montferrat, everyone of them is comfortable and well furnished, but everyone has a defect: you have only to take your pick.

Few steps from B&B, you will be able to enjoy typical Montferrat dishes thanks to one of the many typical restaurants that populate this country. Sometimes you shall not even need to walk, because the B&B itself could offer you directly its own restaurant, often at best quality standard.

Now, if you like it, we may start from Pleasantville to pay a visit to a beautiful, still in very good condition, Romanic church, one in the large number that stud this country, often placed on the top of a nice hill, giving you the chance for a pleasant walk too. From this point, always if you like it, you’ll make for the neighbouring medieval castle, usually perfectly restored and open to the public.

With regard to Romanic: during your weekend in Basso Monferrato, don’t miss the most famous monument of the Romanic art in Piedmont: The Abbey of Vezzolano (near the small town of Vezzolano, exactly!).

The Programme, as we were saying, is not only Cultural, but also “Gourmand”, so that, for the appraisers of wine and good eating, we’ll point our attention at a cookery destination. Also in this case good places are innumerable, practically any location could reveal itself fully satisfying for eating and drinking. Nevertheless, as we did before for art, also in this case we should like to recommend you Cocconato, the “Monferrato Riviera”, so called for its extremely mild climate.

Cocconato is a town characterized by a nice medieval centre and a notable town hall. In Cocconato, and in many other locations in Basso Monferrato, you will have the chance to visit a producer’s cellar and to taste best wines by one of many wine maker firms, widespread in the country.

We tried to suggest you a possible plot for your next stay, but, of course, that’s not all!

For people who love sports, this country offers interesting and beautiful mountain bike trekking, rides, specific paths for Nordic Walking.

If you are particularly quiet and romantic, you’ll find long walks immersed in the green, along lakes or across relaxing hills, of fitness walks with a personal trainer.

For those who are looking for real relax, spas and beauty farms are generally available.

Finally, for real lovers of culture and arts: historical castles (this land is full of them), documentary museums, galleries of plastic casts, church treasures and much more, all for the pleasure of the Tourist “del Monferrato”!!
