The tourist that comes to Monferrato gets very often a feeling of faint mystery, as if this territory would hide some secret to be disclosed, or as if something untold was there. Sometimes, however, this feeling could suddenly turn to love at first sight. After this, if the same visitor loves to shift and go along enchanting itineraries, then the alternative choices for him become really numerous.
The “Francigena” way, towards Chivasso, that follows the route of the ancient roman road, was covered during Middle Ages by pilgrims coming from Rome and going to the main sanctuaries of Europe. Many Romanic churches witness this “road for faith” at present time, and we can meet with them on our way.
Today, these small churches, well restored and open to the public, can be found on the most elevated hills of Monferrato, immersed in the green, or in little cemeteries. The towns where you can find them are, for instance, Cerreto, Cortazzone, Montafia, Montechiaro, Montiglio, and many other more.
After all that, don’t miss a visit to the abbey of Vezzolano, the most important Romanic monument in Piedmont.
Another ancient road we suggest you to go passes through the Valle Versa, towards Asti, and is important for the castles you can see there. Castell’Alfero, Frinco, Montiglio, Passerano, Rinco are some of the localities related to this story. At the end of the run, you can really end up with a flourish visiting the small town Cocconato, a real terrace over Montferrat, which is proud of its beautiful medieval historical centre.
In eastern Montferrat, landscapes turn to pleasant hills, in the heart of the ancient powerful Marquisate of Montferrat: here one can find wonderful historical evidences, like the castle of Montemagno, vestiges of Romanic art, parish churches made precious by masterpieces of local painters.
But, apart from itineraries, Montferrat always gives to its visitors so many satisfying attractions: they can be found everywhere in this country and are good for any palate, even the most sophisticated. We can then mention the ethnographic museums, the vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, the natural parks and reserves, the “Langa Astigiana” (country territory around Asti) and its medieval watch towers, the amazing “Sacro Monte” of Crea.
At last, after all this wandering through so many interesting activities, it only remains to relax and sit at table enjoying the wonders of the typical local cuisine.
